India for Diversity, Inclusion, and Action or Project InDIA is a social initiative that aims to support and create Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committees in NGO schools to help develop an inclusive educational environment for students from marginalized communities. In this vein, we have curated a comprehensive handbook that details the principles for diversity, equity, and inclusion and provides tangible information that can be utilized to promote these values in schools. While these guidelines can help teachers and educators make their classrooms more inclusive, we acknowledge the need to educate students as well. Hence, we plan to create an interactive activity book geared towards younger students that explore themes of diversity in a mindful and age-appropriate manner, with activities such as roleplaying exercises and storytelling prompts that can aid students in developing empathy and understanding.
Project InDIA also hopes to organize a series of expert-led sessions geared towards NGO educators through which they can explore complex principles of intersectionality, cultural sensitivity, allyship, and advocacy and learn how to practice these principles in their work with children and parents from marginalized communities. To fund these initiatives, and bolster the efforts of local NGOs, we will organize an online fundraising campaign to collect proceeds. Lastly, our long-term vision is to create a network through which DEI committees at NGO schools can offer education, create safe spaces for feedback and discussion, and aid in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Indian educational system.
